The Seattle Mariners have been without ace pitcher Logan Gilbert since late April, as Gilbert suffered a right elbow flexor strain against the Miami Marlins. Mariners fans and fantasy baseball owners are currently wondering when Gilbert will be back and return to the field. Below, we will provide an update on Gilbert's injury and project potential return dates.
🚑 When will Logan Gilbert return and be back with Mariners?
Gilbert is inching closer to an MLB return. The Mariners' ace had his second rehab start for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers on Wednesday, throwing 60 pitches. He gave up two earned runs on five hits and one walk, and struck out a pair of batters. His velocity dipped a bit as the game wore on, but it was nothing alarming.
Gilbert had his first rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma against the Salt Lake City Bees on May 29. The righty struggled, as just 24 of his 45 pitches were strikes. Gilbert last pitched for the Mariners on April 25. He has now been out of the Seattle rotation for 42 days.
Missing around 6-7 weeks of action seems to be the standard for MLB pitchers with this type of injury. Then-New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes went to the IL with this type of injury on Sept. 24 last fall. Cortes was rushed back to the Yankees pitching staff given that New York went on a lengthy playoff run. He ultimately went 37 days in between outings. So, around 40 days is the bare minimum of time missed for this sort of injury.
Gilbert has progressed nicely and could start for the Mariners as soon as early next week.
Here is a look at Seattle’s schedule around the time of Gilbert's expected return.
- Tuesday, June 10: Seattle Mariners at Arizona Diamondbacks
- Wednesday, June 11: Seattle Mariners at Arizona Diamondbacks
- Friday, June 13: Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners
- Saturday, June 14: Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners
- Sunday, June 15: Cleveland Guardians at Seattle Mariners
- Monday, June 16: Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners
⏳ How long will Logan Gilbert be out for?
It seems likely that Gilbert will be out for a month-and-a-half. Mid-June seems to be the most likely period to bring Gilbert back, but many teams will wait until after the MLB All-Star break to bring players with prolonged injuries back. This year’s MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 15.
The Mariners could use the help as they will likely be in a dog fight with the Houston Astros the rest of the season in the competitive AL West. All told, this looks to be a mild elbow flexor strain for Gilbert. MLB teams use an abundance of caution for this injury when it comes to pitchers, obviously, because of the importance of the elbow when it comes to pitching.
