The Athletics will be without the heart and soul of their team for a chunk of time, as catcher Shea Langeliers is out with a strained left oblique.
Athletics fans and fantasy baseball owners are now wondering when will Langeliers return and be back behind the plate? Below, we deliver a Langeliers injury update and look at how long he will be out for.
🚑 When will Shea Langeliers return and be back with Athletics?
On June 5 against the Minnesota Twins, Langeliers felt discomfort after swinging on a Kody Funderburk pitch that he fouled off. The A’s catcher was removed from the game.
The Athletics originally estimated that Langeliers will be out “at least a few weeks.” By most accounts, it looks like Langeliers suffered somewhere in between a minor and moderate oblique strain.
A decent comparison is in regards to New York Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil. McNeil injured his right oblique in spring training and was out from March 13 to April 25. That ended up being a 43-day injury.
Forty-three days from when Langeliers injured his oblique would be July 17. The Athletics’ first game after the MLB All-Star break is actually Friday, July 18 at Cleveland, so it would make a lot of sense for Langeliers to be targeting that date for a return.
Here is a look at the Athletics’ schedule around that time.
- Friday, July 18: Athletics at Cleveland Guardians
- Saturday, July 19: Athletics at Cleveland Guardians
- Sunday, July 20: Athletics at Cleveland Guardians
- Monday, July 21: Athletics at Texas Rangers
- Tuesday, July 22: Athletics at Texas Rangers
- Wednesday, July 23: Athletics at Texas Rangers
- Thursday, July 24: Athletics at Houston Astros
⏳ How long will Shea Langeliers be out for?
Oblique injuries vary. With mild strains, it only takes around 1-2 weeks to recover. Moderate strains take around 2-6 weeks to heal. Severe strains can take up to 5 months to recover from.
If the A’s were in better position to contend for an American League playoff spot, it is likely that Langeliers’ recovery timeline would be bumped up by a couple of weeks. Expect Langeliers to take his time and be out until after the All-Star break in mid-July.
Langeliers is owned in 80 percent of Yahoo fantasy baseball leagues and is a popular fill-the-gap catcher option. He has 10 home runs on the season, with 27 RBI.
